Spanish
Offering your child a safe environment where they are able to participate, engage with, and build a strong foundation in the Spanish language is the focus of our Spanish enrichment program. Spanish is one of the fastest-growing languages spoken in los Estados Unidos. In fact, the United States has the second largest concentration of Spanish speakers in the world. Being able to communicate with others in a foreign language, especially one as widely spoken as Spanish, is a truly unique opportunity for authentic connection between people.
At the Elementary level, your child is ready to build upon the Spanish-enriched curriculum from the Children's House level, steadily increasing their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. The scope of activities broadens, incorporating independent work with group and pair work as students feel comfortable with having more agency in this plane of development.
A focus on real-life language application
Within the Elementary curriculum lies a broad focus on empowering students with Spanish language they can use in real-life applications. Students may find themselves working in groups using their imagination to create a restaurant menu in Spanish, then practice ordering from it. In the past, students have helped create an entire buffet of foods from various Hispanic and Latinx cultures in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Throughout your child's progression through their Elementary years, each year of experience is built upon. The Montessori method emphasizes following the child's interests while honoring their strengths and areas for growth, so your child will be able to learn the language at their own pace, progressing to more difficult vocabulary and concepts as they are ready. As an emergent bilingual in the authentic Montessori setting of our school, the immersive and experiential learning will prepare your child to use Spanish beyond the classroom walls.
