“The teacher, when she begins work in our schools, must have a kind of faith that the child will reveal himself through work.”
Dual language is a form of education in which students are taught literacy and content in two languages. A dual language program supports children who have already had significant exposure to the target language in continuing their proficiency. A dual language program can also offer exposure to a target language to children with little or no previous experience in this language.
Our goal is for our children to be bilingual and biliterate over time. Children are typically taught to read in their native language first, to establish mastery there before learning to read and write in the target (second) language.
The Casa de Niños program is first and foremost a Montessori program for ages 3-6. Just like our Children's House programs, children begin by learning practical life skills that develop their concentration, independence, fine and gross motor skills and personal and community responsibility. As children move through the three-year cycle, they engage in hands-on activities that provide them with the fundamentals for reading, writing and grammar. Through manipulation of concrete materials they learn the decimal system and mathematical operations.
Children are introduced to physical and cultural geography through puzzle maps, pictures, books and special presentations by parents and teachers. The Arts are woven through the curriculum to support our creative and interdisciplinary approach. Social skills as well as the ability to make appropriate choices are taught through grace and courtesy lessons and peer problem solving.
Both the Casa de Niños and Children's House programs incorporate Kindergarten into the three-year cycle. Children who are five years old by September 1 spend an extended work period with the Montessori teacher, exploring the academic areas of the Montessori Curriculum.
The Casa de Niños is led by native and fluent Spanish speakers. It is a five-day program, with options of a morning session or school day. Before care and Aftercare programs are available, as well.
