Community Education

At the request of our parents and through the work of the Strategic Plan, we're happy to announce a new education series for AMS families. These events are designed to support our parents and guardians, provide education about Montessori, enhance wellness, and build community.

Peaceful Parenting Discussion Group

This group is designed to support AMS parents/guardians with a welcoming space to discuss both challenges and successes during the parenthood journey. Director of Education Gretchen Courage will lead the group. You are welcome each month or to drop in whenever you can. Our first topic will be Handling Conflicts with your Children. The group will decide on future topics of interest.
First Friday of every month 7:30 - 8:30 a.m.
beginning October 7th through May 5th

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Courses

Mindfulness is the willingness to intimately engage with your present moment experience with understanding, kindness, and curiosity. The creator of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Professor of Medicine Emeritus, Jon Kabat-Zinn, defines mindfulness as, "paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non judgementally."

Amherst Mindfulness, led by AMS Board Chair Michele Miller, offers Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) courses for AMS families.

Tuesdays: October 18, October 25, and November 1
6:00-7:15 p.m.

For those looking to deepen their Mindfulness practice, Michele is offering a discount to AMS community members who take either of her evening or daytime 8-week MBSR courses.
 

Exploring Montessori Series

What does Practical Life mean?
Wednesday, September 21 - 5:45-7:00 p.m.
This session will focus on the Montessori Practical Life curriculum including Grace & Courtesy and Peace Education for all ages. Learn how the Montessori curriculum connects all levels from infant/toddler through elementary and how you can use these ideas with your children at home.

The "Great Lessons" 
Wednesday, October 19 - 5:45-7:00 p.m.

This session will focus on the Montessori Great Lessons which spark the elementary child’s imagination and forms the foundation for student research. Elementary and Kindergarten parents are especially encouraged to attend. Childcare available with RSVP.

Evening Share
Wednesday, November 9 - 4:00-6:00 p.m.

Evening Share is a great opportunity to see your child's classroom and all of the new skills she/he has mastered so far. Students will be the teachers for the evening, showing their favorite lessons and activities. Come see the environment from your child's point of view. 

Journey through the Curriculum
Thursday, December 1 - 5:45 - 7:45 p.m.

Journey through the Curriculum is one of the most powerful and informative parent education events of the year. Join us as we explore the Montessori curriculum from Infant through Upper Elementary (ages 6 months through 6th grade). Guests at this event will take a special tour with the Montessori guide of each level to learn first hand how students are uniquely supported throughout each Montessori cycle and program. Childcare available with RSVP.

Move-Up Night
Thursday, January 12 - 5:45-7:45 p.m.
You are invited to attend Move-Up Night to learn about your child's next classroom level experience and how that prepared environment will facilitate and maximize their independent learning and exploration. Childcare available with RSVP.

Exploring the Arts in Montessori
Wednesday, February 15 - 5:45-7:00 p.m.

This session will focus on the Montessori Art Curriculum for all ages and will include exhibits of student work. More details forthcoming.

Morning Share
Tuesday, March 21 - 8:15-9:15 a.m.

Morning Share is a great opportunity to see your child's classroom and all of the new skills she/he has mastered so far. Students will be the teachers, showing their favorite lessons and activities. Come see the environment from your child's point of view. 

Language in the Montessori Curriculum
Wednesday, April 12 - 5:45-7:00 p.m.

Please join us to learn more about the language arts program at AMS from Infant through Elementary. This is a hands-on workshop and you will have a chance to experience a sampling of the ways we develop oral language, awareness of sounds and letters, word study, writing, and reading. Try out a real Writers Workshop.... experience story time.... learn a rhythm and rhyming game... see what it's like to spell your first word.... and more! Led by Gretchen Courage, Director of Education.  Childcare available with RSVP.

Art Show & Music Concert
Thursday, May 25 - 5:45-7:45 p.m.

Art specialist May Emery creates a wonderful exhibition of our students' work from the school year and band director Mike Kolodny and his incredible band perform original student compositions, well known folk tunes, full band arrangements, and selections from the classics and contemporary culture. Music specialist Kathleen Kollman and students from kindergarten and elementary prepare numerous songs to perform that evening. Join us!
